Especially on the harder difficulty levels of Left 4 Dead?

The most effective way in my experience on the highest difficulty, involves players setting the tank on fire using a Molotov, and then running together back through the level until it burns out.

It's not quick, but it's a pretty safe tactic as on the highest difficulty taking on a tank in a straight fire fight is largely futile.

Just want to point out that setting the tank on fire in Campaign mode makes it run faster than normal. On the other hand, in versus mode it actually slows it down a bit. – sdepouw Oct 10 at 22:31
Seems like a propane tank right under it does a ton of dmg to it as well. – Ardalis Oct 16 at 21:50

Generally what my buddies and I do is disperse enough so we can see rapidly who is it following. When we have determined that, we start trying to protect that person, allowing him to run to a secure place while the Tank changes his target. Shoot, repeat.

We generally save Molotovs and Pipe Bombs for possible mobs during the Tank attack. In the case of a mob, we divide in two groups according to the current positions and try to coordinate between the two.

I love tanks on expert, it's very addreneline pumping action. If you all have auto shotties then you can shoot the crap out of him quite quickly but the problem with that is you have to be close. I'd say keep your distance and shoot with the AK or hunting rifle. Also, if you just run away from him he'll die automatically after a while.

If he get somone on the ground then I just roll up behind him with a shotty and pump his back with all 10 rounds, if that doesn't finish him off I leg it.

A little exploit you can use is that it will immediately chase anyone who gets on the mounted turret.

Tanks in versus and coop mode are different as mentioned, so the actual tactics differ.

Common things:

  • Propane/oxygen tanks and boomer explosions stun them for about 2 seconds. Useful, but hard to do it right.
  • Hitting the tank makes it slower, so although an AR does less damage than an autoshotty, it makes the tank much slower due to higher rate of fire. Similarly, mounted turrets work very well against it.

Differences between VS and COOP:

  • Setting a tank on fire makes a tank faster in coop, slower in VS.
  • A burning tank in versus slowly loses its HPs, so weapons + fire works well.
  • A burning tank in coop does NOT take conventional damage, but will die after a fixed amount (differs with respect to difficulty). So, unless you can decrease the tank's HP before the timer runs out, shooting it won't make him die sooner (though you may still want to shoot it to slow it down).
  • Tanks in VS have area of effect damage (i.e. it can damage multiple survivors with a single hit if they are in range) while the tanks in coop don't (this might have changed in one of the latest patches though, not sure).

Even though its not really practical, but i once was in a group where we all 4 took sniper rifles exactly when the tank appear and shot it . It went down really fast .. however, the zombies nearly overran us.
