I always enjoyed the classic BattleTech game from FASA. However, the game tended to take a long time to play if you got into any decent-sized battle, as well as taking up a lot of room (and requiring many miniatures, etc. etc.). The game's a ton of fun, but the WAF (wife acceptance factor) of all that STUFF and time commitment is not very high. A long time ago I ran a PBM BattleTech tournament, but I had to do everything by hand. Not something I've since cared to repeat.

Anyway, what I want is an online version of the classic boardgame. I do not want a first person Mechwarrior clone. I want to be able to create a hex map, create the various mechs involved, assign them to teams, and then play the game with my buddies in a turn-based fashion whenever it's convenient for us. Does such a game exist (either officially or a clone)?

There is always MegaMek which is an open-source Battletech game. I believe you can play online.

Wow, that sounds like nearly perfectly what I'm looking for! – Ardalis Oct 1 at 19:25
...too bad it's not programmed in .NET, though. – Ardalis Oct 1 at 19:26

I know a fair number of people use Vassal for this and other minis games. (http://www.vassalengine.org/community/index.php)

You can actually recreate / play pretty much any boardgame with Vassal. Pretty cool.

Cool, I'll have to check that out. Any pointers to stuff directly related to using Vassal for BattleTech? – Ardalis Oct 1 at 2:06
Nothing off the top of my head. Back when I owned my game store, there were a few guys that used Vassal a lot with D&D Minis and I'm pretty sure they mentioned Battletech (or Mechwarrior / clickytech) as well. – ChrisGWilliams Oct 1 at 4:25

Steve you're in Ohio right? Next May, take yourself to Columbus during the memorial day weekend for a Sci-Fi / Gaming convention called Marcon.

For the past (nearly) 10 years one guy has run a game of Battletech called Brick-Tech where he's built roughly 20 mechs with Legos. There is usually 2 per convention (back-to-back on Saturday), although this past year I think there was only one.

I know this has nothing to do with online BTech, however since you're so close to Columbus the convention entry fee is well worth it to play this game. I've always had fun, even when I was just watching.

you have a link to any pics of that? I would love to see that! – ChrisGWilliams Oct 1 at 21:10
I spelled it wrong, it's "BrickTek". Google for that, you can find a bunch. Here is a set I just found from Marcon: fiveprime.org/hivemind/Tags/lego,marcon – adamstel Oct 1 at 21:23

And of course, the most important picture of them all. I'm the middle of the three people w/ the Adidas shirt (without a head too). flickr.com/photos/12318190@N08/2425798768/in/… – adamstel Oct 1 at 21:30
