My gaming machine:

  • Athlon 64 5000+
  • 4 GB (800Mhz) DDR2
  • GeForce 8600
  • Win7

This machine should be good enough According to the minimum spec I read somewhere. Is it really worth it or would the graphics be cut down too much be fun?

Fortunately Modern Warfare 2 does not need a high-end system to achieve playable framerates and your rig seems above average at least. MW2 and MW1 is quite similar in this matter, I believe they use the same graphics engine (of course MW2 has improvements over its predecessor)

If you want some hands-on experience, I have played MW1 with my old, crappy machine that has an Athlon XP 3000+, 1.5 GB DDR400 Ram and a Geforce 6800 GT. Yes, not even dual core and with a really old GPU, I managed to get around 40 fps in average settings at 1280x1024. Your rig is much better than mine so I don't think you'll have a problem playing it with high settings since it has good optimization (one of the best features of MW in my opinion).

Of course, it will be down to your personal preference, resolution and etc. but you won't have to cut down the graphics too much.

I'm not totally certain on this, but according to the minimum system requirements here.

OS: Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 (Windows 95/98/ME/2000 are unsupported)
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor or better supported
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: 256 MB NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT or better or ATI Radeon 1600XT or better
DirectX: Microsoft DirectX(R) 9.0c
Hard Drive: 12GB of free hard drive space
Sound: 100% DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card
Internet: Broadband connection required for Multiplayer Connectivity. Internet Connection required for activation

You are over the minimum specs, so you should be good. You have a nice graphics card, so if you had to cut down the graphics, it wouldn't be cut that much to make the game not fun. As long as you don't have terrible internet, the online play should be smooth. I think it is your call if you want to buy it. I don't blame you for wanting to have good graphics for such an awesome game !
